Second half 18th century, 94 x 62 cm, East Anatolia (Armenian Highland), Van

This apron was made in Van or one of the surrounding villages formerly inhabited by Armenians. The field design consists of two larger panels at the upper and lower ends as well as seven horizontal stripes placed between them. It is embroidered in cross stitch onto a dark blue wool tabby fabric, mostly in wool yarn with a few highlights in silk. The two borders only surround the lower end and sides. These elaborate aprons were worn by Armenian women on religious holidays and during family celebrations.
